Research interests:
I'm based in the English Department at the University of Ireland, Galway. My PhD thesis explores the representations of Irishness in English-printed, nineteenth-century street ballads – and the reception of these themes in England. My research extends somewhat to include representations of Ireland in popular song including songs of the stage and drawing room. My approach is heavily contextual – especially exploring national/political identity in the intersections that occur between the balladry that was revived in the eighteenth-century, street-balladry, popular poetry and Romantic writing. My primary research material consists of the street ballads printed in England (mainly Manchester and London) between around 1800 and the 1870s.
