My research focuses on Jennett Humphreys (1829–1917), a largely overlooked nineteenth-century scholar and author. A prolific contributor to the Oxford English Dictionary, the Dictionary of National Biography, and numerous literary journals, Humphreys also wrote poetry, children’s books, and essays on historical linguistics and phonetics.
This biographical project seeks to recover Humphreys' life and legacy, offering insight into Victorian intellectual society and its tendency to minimize and sideline the scholarly contributions of women.
