My PhD research focusses on 19th century dog dramas - plays in which canines played character roles. As a subgenre of melodrama, it considers their importance to the theatre economy, popular culture and society's changing attitudes to animals/dogs. It looks at the types of play in which a dog/s performed and the range of doggy actions, where they were staged, who wrote them, who performed with the dogs, what type of 'career' this offered men and dogs and canine celebrity etc. etc.
