I am a PhD candidate undertaking research into mourning in the 19th century, focussing on the material culture of mourning, in particular jewellery. I am researching the contrast between performative mourning clothes, and the production of hair jewellery within the home, in order to answer questions about the difference between public and private grief.
I am also interested in the rise of consumerism and the retail sector, and its effects on the daily lives of urban men and women.
