Research interests:
My interests in Victorian literature and 19th century culture are broad, including both narrative literature and poetry and the history of ideas. I study and teach the novels of Eliot, the Brontes, Hardy, Trollope, and Thackeray and the poetry of Robert and Elizabeth Barrett Browning, Tennyson, and Hopkins. But I also am interested in non-fiction prose writers, Thomas Carlyle, John Stuart Mill, John Henry Newman, Matthew Arnold, and of course, Darwin and Huxley. My work explores the ideas that emerge in the period and are reflected across genres.
